Usman: Jonathan's Sacrifices Saved Nigeria's Democracy

On Tuesday, during the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Nenadi Usman, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), asserted that the sacrifices made by former President Goodluck Jonathan were pivotal in saving Nigeria's democracy from collapse in 2015. Usman highlighted Jonathan's concession of defeat in the presidential election before the final results were announced as a significant act that demonstrated his commitment to democratic principles.

She called on politicians aspiring for elective offices in 2027 to adopt a similar non-violent approach. Usman, a former Minister of Finance, emphasized that Nigeria's current democracy is a result of Jonathan's sacrifices and questioned whether current presidential candidates would be willing to make similar sacrifices.

She also described the Labour Party as the most structured political party in Nigeria, well-positioned to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections, and urged other political parties to consider forming coalitions with the LP.
