Chieftaincy Titles Cannot Block Election Participation

Adebisi Adeyemo, a legal expert, has stated that chieftaincy titles cannot restrict any Nigerian citizen from participating in elections. He referenced the 1999 Constitution, asserting its supremacy in matters of political participation.

Adeyemo highlighted that sections 1, 65, 66, and 106 of the Constitution guarantee the right for qualified citizens to contest for political office, with no mention of disqualification based on chieftaincy status. He criticized attempts by certain high chiefs in Oyo State, including Bolaji Adewoyin, Sarafadeen Alli, and Kola Babalola, to impose restrictions on political participation based on traditional titles.

Adeyemo noted that the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs lacks constitutional authority to enforce such restrictions, which he deemed ultra vires and subject to judicial review. He provided historical examples, such as MKO Abiola and Nnamdi Azikiwe, who held multiple chieftaincy titles yet successfully engaged in politics.

Adeyemo concluded by urging stakeholders in Oyo State to respect constitutional provisions to avoid unnecessary political tension.
