El-Rufai's Detention Raises Legal and Political Concerns

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has been in custody for eight days following his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and subsequent transfer to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). His aide, Muyiwa Adekey, stated that the ICPC has failed to respond to bail applications submitted by El-Rufai's legal team on February 19, despite the expiration of the constitutional 48-hour window for holding suspects without charges.

El-Rufai's lawyer, Ubong Akpan, condemned the search of his residence as unlawful and a violation of due process. The legal team is seeking judicial intervention to secure El-Rufai's release and challenge the legality of the search warrant issued against him.

El-Rufai's detention has attracted significant political and legal attention, with court proceedings scheduled to address his fundamental rights and the legality of his continued detention.
