IG of Police Orders Reduction of Tactical Teams Nationwide

The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has announced a strategic reduction of tactical teams within the Nigerian Police Force as part of efforts to improve supervision and address public complaints regarding the conduct of these units. The directive limits the number of tactical teams to a maximum of five at the zonal command level and three at the divisional level.

This decision follows concerns about the proliferation of tactical units, which have been alleged to operate with poor supervision and contribute to public complaints. The move aims to free up personnel for deployment to police stations, addressing manpower shortages caused by the increasing number of tactical teams.

Disu emphasized that this reduction will not affect state government-created outfits, such as the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, Oyo's Special Response Squad, and Bayelsa's Oper Doo Akpor. The Inspector General's initiative is intended to strengthen accountability and improve the relationship between the police and the community.
