Nigeria Police Clarifies Misrepresentation on Tactical Units

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) issued a statement addressing reports that claimed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu had ordered the disbandment of multiple tactical units operating across state commands nationwide. The NPF described these reports as a misrepresentation of the IGP's directive.

According to the statement, the IGP is aware of public concerns regarding the operations of tactical teams and has directed a reduction of these teams at zonal and state command levels to improve supervision and address complaints against police personnel. The IGP stated that a maximum of five tactical teams should operate at the zonal command level and three at the area command level.

However, he acknowledged the importance of tactical teams in combating crime. The IGP's directive does not apply to state government-created outfits such as the Lagos Rapid Response Squad and similar units in other states.

The NPF aims to enhance community-friendly policing through these adjustments.
