Bayelsa Launches First Secondary Schools Scrabble Championship

On Tuesday, Honourable Daniel Igali, the Commissioner for Development in Bayelsa State, led a delegation from the Ministry of Sports Development to meet with Dr. Emelah Gentle, the Commissioner for Education. This meeting marked the commencement of plans for the inaugural Bayelsa State Secondary Schools Scrabble Championship, following directives from Governor Senator Douye Diri.

The strategic discussions focused on creating a roadmap to introduce scrabble into secondary schools, aligning with the Governor's vision from the sixth edition of the Governor Diri National Scrabble Classics. The two ministries also considered introducing chess to enhance students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Igali emphasized the commitment to nurturing young talents through intellectual sports and proposed a train-the-trainer approach for coaches from the Bayelsa State Sports Council to train teachers. Dr. Gentle expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by the Ministry of Sports Development, highlighting Bayelsa's reputation in school sports and the potential for producing national and international champions.
