IGP Deploys Top Officer to Secure Osun Governorship Election

Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, has ordered Deputy Inspector-General Ishyaku Mohammed to oversee law enforcement across Osun State during Saturday's August 15 governorship election. Mohammed will direct the police's security coordination efforts as part of broader preparations aimed at maintaining order throughout the voting process.

The deployment was announced Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, following earlier personnel mobilisation as political activity accelerates toward polling day. The objective focuses on creating conditions where voters and election officials operate securely while ensuring strict enforcement against electoral offenses.

Separately, Nigeria's Police Force has barred Amotekun—the Western Nigeria Security Network—along with vigilante and civilian security groups from participating in election-day operations. Political parties, candidates and supporters have been warned not to deploy, finance or arm these organisations for election purposes.

According to police statements, only state-authorised security forces will manage the process. This prohibition on non-state security actors serves to consolidate command of security operations during the election.

Though Amotekun functions as a regional initiative across southwestern Nigeria, police leadership determined that official law enforcement alone will coordinate Saturday's arrangements in Osun State.
