Abuja Launches Amateur Basketball Academies League

The Amateur Basketball Academies League was officially launched in Abuja, Nigeria, with the aim of fostering grassroots basketball development. The initiative, supported by the FCT Basketball Association and various stakeholders, seeks to discover and nurture talent across six area councils.

Caretaker Chairman of the FCT Basketball Association, Ifeanyi Ek, emphasized the importance of sustainable investment and partnerships to extend basketball development beyond elite levels. The league is set to commence its pilot edition in July 2026, featuring 20 teams competing in both boys' and girls' categories.

Professor Lucki Abubakar, founder and president of the Amateur Basketball Academy, highlighted the project's goal to revive community basketball and create opportunities for young athletes. The tournament will serve as a platform for identifying future stars capable of representing Nigeria in international competitions.

The event also included the unveiling of the league trophy and recognition of coaches dedicated to mentoring young players.
