Urgent Call for New Awujale Before Sallah Festival

The Chief Imam of Ijebuland has called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure the selection of a new Awujale is completed before the Sallah festival. This appeal follows the death of the late monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona, on July 13, 2025.

The governor had previously halted the selection process, which was announced by Ganiyu Hamzat on January 20, 2025, due to security concerns and petitions from stakeholders. The traditional kingmakers were urged to resume the selection of the 60th Awujale without further delay, as the absence of a monarch disrupts longstanding traditions, particularly during the Ileya festival.

Otunba Abdul Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, chairman of the ruling house, emphasized the importance of the festival and the need for a new Awujale to uphold cultural practices. The Chief Imam also highlighted the historical significance of the festival, which dates back to 1875, and the role of the Awujale in providing rams for sacrifice during Eid celebrations.
