Malami Vows to Defend Himself After Custody Release

Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has publicly stated his intention to defend himself following his release from custody. He faces 16 counts of charges related to money laundering, with his wife Bashir Asab and son Abdulaziz also implicated.

Malami has pleaded not guilty to the charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His legal troubles intensified after his rearrest on January 19, 2023, and he was released from Kuje Prison after a federal high court in Abuja granted him bail on February 27, 2023, fixing the bail at N200 million in connection with alleged terrorism-related offenses.

In an interview, Malami reflected on his experiences in various detention facilities, including the EFCC, Kuje Prison, and DSS, describing the ordeal as part of a divine process. He expressed confidence in his defense against the allegations and criticized the manner in which the investigations were conducted, citing violations of his rights during searches of his home and business premises.
