Orji Kalu Threatens to Leave APC Over Catholic Bishops

Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, declared that he would resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ever disrespects Catholic bishops. Kalu made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he refuted claims that Tinubu had insulted the Catholic Church.

He emphasized that the President maintains a healthy relationship with the Catholic Church and that the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) serves as the nation's conscience. Kalu noted that Tinubu has consistently engaged with Catholic leaders and that their statements should not be viewed as antagonistic.

This declaration follows a controversy involving Cardinal John Onaiyekan, who raised concerns about Nigeria's economic hardship and insecurity during a meeting with Tinubu. Kalu expressed confidence in Tinubu's potential for re-election in 2027, rating the administration's performance at 65% and asserting that the government's achievements need better communication to the public.
