Kalu Backs Bishops on Nigeria's Economic Realities

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu defended the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), stating that its members will always inform President Bola Tinubu about the true state of the nation rather than conceal the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians. Kalu's remarks followed a meeting between President Tinubu and the bishops at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Cardinal John Onaiyekan expressed concerns about worsening economic hardship and insecurity.

Kalu described the bishops as independent moral voices whose advice aims to enhance the nation's welfare, not to attack any government. He acknowledged the economic difficulties Nigerians are experiencing but noted that President Tinubu inherited many of these challenges.

Kalu urged government officials to heed the bishops' concerns to shape beneficial policies. He clarified that there is no significant disagreement between the presidency and the bishops, viewing differing opinions as opportunities for reflection.

Kalu also corrected the misconception that Cardinal Onaiyekan is the president of the CBCN.
