Illegal Miners Kill Officer, Burn Vehicle in Niger Attack

On Thursday, illegal miners attacked security operatives near Zuzungi in the Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, killing one officer from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and burning their operational vehicle. The attack occurred during a law enforcement operation aimed at enforcing a ban on illegal mining.

The NSCDC and police had dispatched a special team to the area when the miners opened fire. The slain officer's identity has not yet been disclosed, and an investigation into the incident has commenced.

In response to the violence, the Niger Ministry of Mineral Resources announced a temporary closure of the Zuzungi mine site for two weeks to facilitate thorough sanitization operations and restore order. Alhaji Idri Legbo, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, condemned the attack as a direct assault on the law and urged artisan miners to comply with regulatory requirements to promote safety and sustainable mining development.
