ADC Condemns El-Rufai's Detention as Unconstitutional

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, describing it as illegal and unconstitutional. In a statement issued by the party's national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC alleged that El-Rufai is being held in custody to coerce him into abandoning his political affiliations.

The party called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to either release El-Rufai or formally arraign him in court. The ADC emphasized that his detention without arraignment undermines constitutional rights, including the right to liberty, fair hearing, and political participation.

They further claimed that El-Rufai's detention restricts his access to family and medical care, asserting that it is being used as a tool to suppress political participation in the state. The ADC warned that if the situation is not addressed, it could undermine Nigeria's democratic principles and called on relevant state actors, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and ICPC leadership, to comply with constitutional provisions.
