Somali Referee Omar Artan to Officiate UEFA Super Cup

Omar Artan, a 34-year-old Somali referee, is set to officiate the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on Wednesday. Artan was previously denied entry to the United States for the World Cup due to allegations of being associated with suspected members of terrorist organizations, which he rejected.

This incident garnered sympathy for him in Somalia, where he was celebrated upon his return. FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed regret over the situation, stating, “We don’t control everything.” In response to the controversy, UEFA appointed Artan to referee the Super Cup, citing a cooperation agreement signed with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in April.

Artan, who is also the first Somali to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024, expressed pride in his achievements despite the challenges he faced. His appointment is seen as a political gesture by UEFA amid ongoing tensions with FIFA regarding tournament management and governance.
