IMF Approves $700 Million Loan for Sri Lanka Amid Crisis

On Thursday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $700 million loan for Sri Lanka, emphasizing the need for the government to accelerate reforms to safeguard macroeconomic stability. This approval is part of a larger four-year bailout totaling $2.9 billion, aimed at supporting Sri Lanka's economic recovery post-2022.

The IMF's conditions include addressing the energy price crisis exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has significantly affected energy prices globally. The Sri Lankan government plans to allocate nearly $200 million to fuel subsidies as a response to the energy crunch caused by the Iran war.

The IMF also highlighted the urgency of reform momentum, especially as Sri Lanka's economy contracted by 7.3 percent in 2022 following the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid widespread protests. The current administration, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayak, is expected to maintain austerity measures and high tax rates introduced by its predecessor.
