TETFund Boss Critiques Nigeria's Import Dependence

Arc. Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), expressed concern over Nigeria's heavy dependence on imported building materials, which he stated accounts for nearly 80% of the materials used in the country's building sector.

He made these remarks during a courtesy visit from the leadership of the Female Architects of Nigeria (FAN) at the TETFund headquarters in Abuja. Echono called for architects to lead research into locally sourced alternatives to transform the construction industry, emphasizing that while some local production has improved, critical components like doors and windows are still imported.

He encouraged female architects to utilize TETFund’s research support initiatives to develop affordable and sustainable housing solutions to address Nigeria's housing deficit. Additionally, Echono announced a National Research Fair scheduled for November at Eagle Square, Abuja, where researchers and professionals can showcase their innovations.

Arc. Ene Agada, Chairperson of FAN, recognized Echono's contributions to education and research by presenting him with the FAN Award of Excellence.
