In High-risk Counter-terrorism Operation, FG Captures Globally-wanted Al-Qaeda Leaders

The Federal Government of Nigeria has achieved a significant victory in the fight against terrorism by capturing two top leaders of the Jama'at Ansarul Muslimina fi Bilad al-Sudan (Ansaru), an affiliate of Al-Qaeda. National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu announced the capture of Mahmud Muhammad Usman and Abu Bara Abbas Mukhtar, who are internationally wanted for their involvement in various terrorist activities.

The operation, conducted between May and July 2025, involved deep surveillance and intelligence tracking, leading to the successful apprehension of the two men. Ribadu highlighted that the capture of these leaders represents a major blow to Ansaru and a significant step towards eliminating the terrorist group.
