Ogun Residents Sentenced to Community Service for Waste Disposal

On a Friday at approximately 6:15 AM, eight residents of Ogun State were apprehended for indiscriminate waste disposal at a public road near Isal Igbein car wash in Abeokuta. The Ogun State Magistrate Court, presided over by Justice K.

Araba, sentenced the offenders to community service after they were found guilty of two counts of violating public health laws. The prosecution, led by Sanitarian Kehind Ogunsola from the Ogun State Ministry of Health, argued that the waste emitted offensive odors, attracted flies, and posed health risks, including the potential spread of cholera.

The offenders, identified as Oyebanjo Abidemi, Aminat Adewusi, Aminat Olarewaju, Omolana Olusola, Abiola Moridiya, Olaogun Mari, Abiodun Aromokun, and Iwenya Sylvest, were ordered to display their community service on the court's notice board. Ogun State Waste Management Authority's Managing Director, Farouk Adeniyi Akintund, praised the judiciary for supporting efforts to combat waste dumping and urged residents to avoid such practices.
