LAWMA Convicts 16 for Illegal Waste Disposal in Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has successfully secured the conviction of 16 individuals for environmental offenses, specifically illegal waste disposal at unauthorized locations across Lagos State. The Oshodi Special Offences Mobile Court sentenced these offenders to four months in prison for multiple infractions, including indiscriminate waste disposal and failure to patronize assigned private sector participants, which breaches environmental sanitation laws.

Mukaila Sanusi, the Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, confirmed that the enforcement team conducted surveillance operations that led to these arrests. Dr.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, described the judgment as a strong demonstration of the state government's resolve to enforce environmental laws and safeguard public health. He emphasized that the agency will continue to strengthen surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure compliance with approved waste management practices and improve waste management infrastructure and service delivery across the state.
