Ogun State Chosen for UNIDO Waste Management Project

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has selected Ogun State as a pilot for the Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment (OGREE) Waste Management Project, aimed at fostering a circular economy and sustainable environmental management in Nigeria. Dr Ola Oresanya, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, announced this during a UNIDO workshop in Abeokuta.

He stated that Ogun's selection underscores the government's commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative resource management approaches. The state was chosen under UNIDO’s Project 220145, Component 2, which focuses on Nigeria’s transition to net-zero emissions through circular economy initiatives.

Oresanya attributed the selection to Ogun's ongoing circular economy programs and environmental initiatives, including the distribution of over 3,000 biomass smokeless stoves to reduce carbon emissions. He also mentioned the state’s adoption of electric bikes and CNG buses as part of its Energy Transition Roadmap.

The workshop aimed to engage various stakeholders in contributing to the project’s successful implementation.
