INEC Adopts Osun Election as Model for 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has adopted the recently concluded Osun State governorship election as a benchmark for the preparations for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, stated that the commission would build on the improvements observed during the August 15 governorship election, particularly in polling unit openings, the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), electronic result transmission, and the management of electoral challenges.

Amupitan made these remarks on Friday during a visit from David Sproule, the Chargé d’Affaires of Canada to Nigeria, at INEC headquarters in Abuja. He noted that 94.5% of polling units in Osun opened early and emphasized the importance of technology and logistics in improving election administration.

INEC has already begun preparations for the 2027 elections, with a focus on technological improvements, electoral inclusion, and misinformation management. A nationwide mock accreditation exercise is planned for November 2026 to test electoral equipment.
