INEC Confirms SDP Leadership Ahead of 2027 Elections

On Tuesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) affirmed the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after a comprehensive verification exercise aimed at ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions and international governance standards ahead of the 2027 general elections. SDP's National Chairman, Sadiq Gomb, disclosed the outcome during a press conference at the party's national secretariat in Abuja shortly after the verification concluded.

An eleven-member INEC team conducted an extensive review of the party's structure, including its national executive committee and administrative framework. The verification process involved physical identification of party leaders and scrutiny of financial records.

Gomb confirmed that the SDP met the legal requirement of having a presence in at least two-thirds of the states in the federation. The verification also included examining both electronic and hard copies of the party's membership register.

Gomb emphasized the party's commitment to growth and democratic progress, noting that the current leadership emerged from a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the autonomy of political parties in managing internal affairs.
