INEC's Recognition of Gabam Triggers SDP Leadership Dispute

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognized Shehu Gabam as the legitimate chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a decision that has sparked a fresh dispute within the party's leadership. This recognition was reflected on INEC's official website, which displayed Gabam's name alongside other party officials, including Olu Agunloy and Hajia Maggi Mariam.

This decision follows a judgment from the Court of Appeal in Abuja, delivered on March 27, 2026, which affirmed Gabam's position as the authentic chairman of the SDP. However, other party members, including Rufu Aiyenigba, have rejected INEC's recognition, claiming it is unconstitutional and an intrusion into the party's internal affairs.

They argue that there is no valid court order supporting this recognition and warn INEC against interfering in the party's matters. The leadership tussle has been complicated by previous court rulings, including a dismissal of a case challenging the legitimacy of the party's leadership structure.
