INEC Urges Grassroots Mobilization for Voter Engagement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged for grassroots mobilization to increase voter participation in Lagos State. Prof.

Ayobami Salami, representing INEC, emphasized the critical role of civic leaders in promoting citizen engagement in the electoral process during a town hall workshop organized by Yiaga Africa in partnership with the Springwel Development Initiative. He highlighted that every Nigerian has a responsibility to ensure the success of the electoral process and warned against voter apathy, stating that not registering to vote does not solve national challenges.

Salami also noted that INEC is expanding the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to ensure accessibility for all eligible Nigerians, including persons with disabilities. He appealed to civic leaders to promote peaceful participation during elections and to disseminate information about voter registration, particularly in public spaces like churches and mosques.

Mr. Michael Ogunsola from Yiaga Africa stressed the importance of youth participation and vigilance throughout the electoral process to ensure that votes are counted.
