INEC Chief Confirms Ekiti June 2026 Election Ready With Tech, Security

INEC Chairman Amupitan says the Ekiti governorship poll will test Nigeria's electoral system ahead of 2027, with technology and security measures in place.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared itself prepared to conduct the Ekiti State governorship election on June 20, 2026, with enhanced technological systems and security arrangements in place. INEC Chairman Prof.
Joash Amupitan made the announcement during meetings with stakeholders in Ado Ekiti this week, detailing the commission's operational readiness across multiple fronts. Amupitan identified the Ekiti poll as a critical proving ground for Nigeria's electoral machinery before the 2027 general elections.
The election will allow the commission, electoral stakeholders, and the public to assess how existing security protocols and technological infrastructure perform in a live electoral environment. The chairman cautioned that election-day disinformation and unverified results remain significant threats to democratic credibility and pledged INEC's commitment to countering these risks.
The commission has completed verification of voter registrations across Ekiti's 16 local government areas, 177 wards, and 2,445 polling units. The total registered electorate now stands at 1,059,360 voters, an increase from the 2023 figure of 987,647.
INEC will deploy its full suite of technology, including the bimodal voter accreditation system, as the sole instrument for voter authentication and accreditation during the election. Amupitan stated that security arrangements will be prioritized to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot, working alongside relevant security agencies.
The electoral commission has coordinated directly with political parties, security services, media outlets, and civil society organizations during the preparation phase. The nine days before the June 20 election will be used for final pre-election meetings and logistical confirmations with key stakeholders.
