INEC Completes Guidelines Update for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, has concluded a clause-by-clause realignment of its regulations and guidelines to ensure they are legally sound and in sync with the new Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 elections.

This announcement was made during a consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja on Tuesday. Amupitan emphasized that the review is significant, particularly in light of the recent enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which impacts the management of election expenses by political parties.

The commission aims to foster transparency and fairness in the electoral landscape, with specific attention to the conduct of party primaries and campaign activities. Additionally, the commission has established clear standards for financial management of political activities, promoting accountability and inclusivity, especially for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Dr. Yusuf Dantal, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), highlighted the shortcomings of the current electoral legal framework and the need for public engagement in the amendment process.
