INEC Declares Prison Inmate Winner Of Enugu Rerun Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared prison inmate Bright Ngene of the Labour Party (LP) as the winner of the rerun election in Enugu South 1 State Constituency. Ngene, a legal practitioner currently serving a jail term in Enugu Prison, emerged victorious in the election held on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

This declaration by INEC brings an end to the crisis that followed the attempt to conduct the rerun election ordered by the court. The update, signed by Sam Olumekun, national commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, confirmed Ngene as the winner.

This election result comes after disruptions and violence in previous elections in Enugu and Kano States. INEC spokesperson in Enugu, Rex Achumie, also confirmed Ngene's victory in the rerun election.
