INEC Focuses on Logistics for FCT Council Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has highlighted the critical role of transport logistics in conducting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council Election, scheduled for February 21, 2026. INEC Chairman Prof.

Joash Amupitan met with leaders from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to discuss the necessity of their commitment to ensure a credible electoral outcome. Amupitan noted that approximately 1,132 vehicles will be engaged for the election, which will see 570 candidates contesting for chairmanship, vice-chairmanship, and councillorship positions across six area councils.

He expressed concerns over past logistical failures, particularly during the Anambra State election, which faced significant challenges due to poor vehicle conditions. NURTW's legal director, Merci Ibeh, acknowledged these issues and emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue with INEC.

Abdullahi Dauda, NURTW's FCT chairman, assured INEC of the union's commitment to smooth transport operations during the election.
