INEC Addresses Over 5,400 Voter Register Claims Ahead of Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported receiving more than 5,400 claims and objections concerning its Preliminary Register of Voters, which is part of its efforts to ensure an accurate voters’ database for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this announcement on a Friday in Abuja while meeting with the ECOWAS Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission.
The claims include over 4,800 recorded at registration areas and about 600 objections submitted through electoral officers and Resident Electoral Commissioners. Most submissions pertain to corrections and minor discrepancies identified during the display exercise.
Amupitan confirmed that all valid claims and objections would be resolved before the Final Register of Voters is certified on December 15, 2026. He emphasized the importance of a credible final register, given the current voter population of over 103 million.
Additionally, INEC plans to conduct a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November and has introduced safeguards for authenticating election results at polling units.
