INEC Recognises Gombe as SDP National Chairman Following Court Order

The Independent National Electoral Commission has formally acknowledged Prof. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe as the Social Democratic Party's national chairman, updating its official documentation following a ruling by the Supreme Court.

This development signals a pivotal shift in addressing the protracted internal turmoil that has affected the opposition party's organizational structure. Following a court directive, Gombe's position was restored, leading the electoral body to implement this adjustment.

Shehu Gabam, who previously served in the chairman's capacity, was deleted from INEC's registry of recognized party officials. The former leader became involved in the organization's prolonged leadership dispute, which encompassed extended court fights and successive legal appeals regarding his tenure.

Amongst SDP membership, substantial discord has developed over recent periods, with competing factions putting forth divergent claims regarding leadership appointments, thus creating ambiguity over legitimate party spokespersons. The refreshed INEC database now presents Gombe's designation paired with additional roles within the party's administrative setup.

His acknowledgment as the party's chief chairman demonstrates the commission's deference to the nation's apex tribunal's decision. The independent electoral body issued a communication confirming that the structural modification was executed in accordance with the Supreme Court's definitive pronouncement.
