INEC Rejects Calls for Chairman Amupitan's Resignation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly rejected calls for the resignation of its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, which were made by members of opposition parties. This demand arose after INEC's decision not to recognize a faction within the commission.

INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, condemned the calls as a direct assault on the commission's constitutionally guaranteed independence. The statement highlighted that Amupitan's appointment and any potential removal are strictly governed by law.

INEC also noted that it is currently engaged in a nationwide voter revalidation exercise and is preparing for upcoming off-cycle elections in Ekiti in June 2026 and Osun in August 2026. The commission warned against politicizing administrative decisions and emphasized its commitment to following legal processes, particularly in light of a court appeal judgment that prevents the repeat of elections in Zamfara and Plateau states.
