INEC Unveils Candidates for Gombe By-Election Following Tongo's Death

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of candidates for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency by-election. This election was prompted by the death of Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo on June 12, 2026, in an Abuja hospital.

Tongo was a member of the House of Representatives representing the constituency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The House of Representatives declared the seat vacant on July 23, 2026, following Tongo's death, as announced by the Speaker, Rt.

Hon. Abbas Tajudeen. The candidates cleared to contest include Yaya Alfa Muhammad from the Allied Peoples Party (APP), Kallamu Usman Maijama’a from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gaddafi Haruna from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Abdulkarim Abdulmajib from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The candidates possess various qualifications, including First School Leaving Certificate, Senior Secondary School Certificate, National Certificate in Education, bachelor’s degree, and doctorate qualifications.
