INEC's Amupitan: Security Vital for Nigeria's Elections

Joash O. Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), highlighted the critical link between national security and credible elections in Nigeria during a visit from the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) at INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

Amupitan stressed that ensuring security is a top priority for maintaining the integrity of elections as Nigeria deepens its democratic process. He acknowledged AANISS's role in building the capacity of senior security officers to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture, noting that electoral integrity is directly connected to national stability.

Mike Ejiofor, president of AANISS, explained that the visit aimed to bolster collaboration between electoral bodies and security institutions in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The delegation included senior officials from the armed forces and security intelligence agencies, emphasizing the importance of strategic coordination in electoral security.

Amupitan's recent appointment comes with significant responsibilities, given Nigeria's population of approximately 200 million people.
