INEC Seeks NASS Nod For Inmates Voting Rights

INEC is seeking approval from the National Assembly to allow inmates the right to vote in Nigerian elections. The Commission's Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the importance of upholding the human right to vote, which is often taken away from citizens serving time in correctional facilities.

Yakubu highlighted a 2019 Court of Appeal judgment that upheld the right of inmates, particularly those awaiting trial, to register and vote in elections. He stressed the need for clear legal provisions to guide the process and ensure compliance with electoral laws.

The collaboration between INEC and the Correctional Service aims to address concerns such as access to registration, polling units in correctional facilities, and political campaign activities. The Commission is working to clarify legal provisions and engage with the National Assembly to enable inmate voting rights.
