INEC Raises Security Concerns for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a warning about emerging security threats to Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman spoke during the 2nd annual lecture of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies, emphasizing that credible elections are inseparable from national security.

He noted that Nigeria is entering a critical phase as the 2027 elections are scheduled for January 16 for presidential and national assembly elections, and February 6 for governorship polls. The chairman identified sophisticated threats, including social media volatility, AI-driven misinformation, and foreign information manipulation, which compound logistical security challenges.

He stressed the importance of restoring public trust in elections to prevent unrest, citing a decline in voter turnout from 53% in 2011 to 26% in 2023 as a serious security risk. The commission's reliance on technological tools, such as the bimodal voter accreditation system and INEC result viewing portal, was highlighted as critical safeguards against fraud.

He called for stronger inter-agency collaboration and the establishment of an inter-agency consultative committee on electoral security.
