INEC to Deploy 1.4 Million Corps Members for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the deployment of 1.4 million National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan made this disclosure during a visit to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja, emphasizing the critical role of corps members in Nigeria's democratic process.

He stated that corps members have been the backbone of electoral operations since 1999, particularly as ad hoc staff at polling units nationwide. For the upcoming elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, INEC requires 707,384 corps members for presidential and national assembly elections, and an additional 707,384 for governorship and state assembly elections on February 6, 2027.

Amupitan acknowledged the significant contributions of corps members during the 2023 elections, where they accounted for nearly 90% of registered area officers. He also noted the risks faced by corps members during electoral duties and assured that INEC is working with security agencies to enhance safety measures.

The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Nafiu, reaffirmed the commitment of the scheme to support INEC in conducting credible elections.
