INEC to Use BVAS for FCT Area Council Elections 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026. Professor Joash Amupitan, the INEC Chairman, confirmed that results will be uploaded to the IReV portal to enhance transparency.

The commission has prepared 2,822 polling units, with four officials assigned to each unit, and expects to deploy no fewer than 11,288 ad hoc personnel to facilitate the electoral process. Amupitan emphasized the importance of a peaceful and credible election, urging political parties and candidates to conduct themselves appropriately.

The FCT Police Command announced movement restrictions on election day from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM to ensure voter safety. A total of 17 political parties will field 637 candidates for 68 electoral positions across 62 wards, with 1,680,315 registered voters expected to participate.
