INEC to Review Court Judgment on Nigeria Democratic Congress

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced it will review a court judgment concerning the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after it receives a certified true copy of the ruling. This follows a decision by Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which on June 26, 2026, set aside an earlier order from December 10, 2025, that directed INEC to register the NDC.

The court ruled that the Peace Movement Party, which did not join the suit, was affected by the earlier judgment. Consequently, the court ordered a fresh hearing of the substantive case, necessitating the participation of all relevant parties.

NDC's National Chairman, Senator Mose Cleopa, stated the party would challenge the ruling, arguing that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to revisit a matter already decided. The NDC's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other opposition figures have described the ruling as a threat to Nigeria's multiparty democracy and vowed to pursue legal remedies.
