INEC Uncovers Deceased Politicians in Nigeria's Voter Register Ahead of 2027 Elections

Professor Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), disclosed during a quarterly meeting in Abuja that Nigeria's voter register contains names of deceased individuals, including notable politicians. INEC intends to conduct a nationwide verification exercise to eliminate ineligible names, such as deceased persons, from the register in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

The verification exercise aims to enhance public confidence in the electoral process. Amupitan highlighted the need to consult stakeholders, including the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and the National Population Commission (NPC), to establish credible mechanisms for identifying and removing deceased voters.

This revelation follows concerns raised after the recent Anambra governorship election where only a fraction of the 2.9 million registered voters participated. INEC is withholding the release of the 2027 election timetable pending ongoing amendments to the Electoral Act.
