INEC Warns Against Voter Apathy for Osun Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified voter apathy as a significant challenge to electoral participation in Nigeria, particularly ahead of the Osun State governorship election set for August 15, 2026. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, stated that despite improvements in electoral administration, many eligible citizens fail to participate due to misinformation and inadequate knowledge of the electoral process.

Babalola urged for intensified voter education strategies and public engagement to bridge the information gap among voters. She directed electoral officers to strengthen grassroots outreach programs in areas with historically low voter turnout, prioritizing voter education initiatives.

Babalola also emphasized the importance of involving stakeholders such as political parties, civil society organizations, youth groups, and traditional leaders to enhance public confidence in the electoral process. She reaffirmed INEC's commitment to ensuring equal participation opportunities for women, youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups, while warning against the dangers of misinformation that could undermine public trust in elections.
