Infantino Calls Emergency FIFA Summit Amid Crisis

FIFA president Gianni Infantino convened an emergency FIFA council meeting in Morocco after a failed World Cup commercial plan left him vulnerable. The decision to abandon the sale of partial stakes in a commercial body for managing lucrative football activities faced severe backlash from member associations.

FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom described the situation as a “sad and reproachable series of events.” Arsene Wenger, FIFA's top officer for global development, distanced himself from Infantino, stating that the plan would undermine “transparency, sincerity and responsibility which characterize good governance in sport.” Several UEFA members and the Football Association of Wales expressed a loss of confidence in Infantino's presidency, with Jordanian football boss Prince Ali Bin Hussein accusing him of “blackmail.” UEFA is reportedly preparing legal action. Despite this, Infantino has received support from various African football bodies and nations including Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, although it remains uncertain if this support will suffice as he seeks re-election.
