Insecurity: 54 African defence chiefs meet in Abuja today

The International Conference Centre in Abuja is hosting a meeting of 54 African defense chiefs today, with Nigeria's Defense Chief Christopher Musa declaring the event open. The summit aims to unite African military forces and address security challenges on the continent without relying on external solutions.

Musa expressed concern about the influx of terrorist weapons from countries like Libya into Nigeria and emphasized the need for African countries to work together to find indigenous solutions. The summit, the first of its kind, will allow African defense leaders to openly discuss the continent's problems and chart a way forward.

Musa highlighted the success of regional cooperation in West Africa through ECOWAS and noted that the operationalization of the African Standby Force has faced delays due to challenges in doctrine, strategy, and funding. The summit is expected to provide a fresh impetus to address these issues.
