Tinubu Advocates for State Police Constitutional Amendment

On Wednesday night, President Bola Tinubu called on the leadership of the 10th Senate to initiate the process of amending the Constitution to permit the establishment of state police. This appeal was made during an interfaith breakfast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he highlighted the complex security threats facing Nigeria that necessitate urgent structural reforms in policing.

Tinubu explained that state police would enhance security at the grassroots level, enabling state governments to respond more swiftly to crimes within their territories. He noted that a decentralized police system would work alongside existing federal security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and community participation.

Tinubu praised the cooperation of the National Assembly and stressed the importance of unity among government arms to effectively combat insecurity and restore public confidence. He also acknowledged the Senate's support for his economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and tax reforms, which he described as essential for stabilizing the economy.
