NATO Summit Gift Sparks Legal Issues Over Revolver

On August 19, 2025, during a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gifted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer a personalized .357 Magnum revolver, engraved with Starmer's name, accompanied by six live rounds. This unusual gesture aimed to highlight Turkey's defense industry, specifically the weapon manufactured by Turkey's state-linked arms maker, MKE, in 1990.

However, the gift quickly led to legal and customs complications, as the revolver could not be legally transported back to the United Kingdom due to domestic firearm regulations. The Turkish government was tasked with managing the gift through official channels, involving embassy customs officials.

Other European leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, also received similar gifts, which were meant to symbolize diplomatic goodwill but inadvertently created cross-border security paperwork issues.
