Turkish Comedian Deniz Goktas Faces Trial for Satire

Deniz Goktas, a 32-year-old Turkish comedian, is currently on trial for allegedly insulting President Recep Erdogan and other offenses during his stand-up show. Goktas was arrested on July 3 after a YouTube video of his performance went viral, garnering nine million views.

He faces charges including incitement to public hatred and praising crime, with potential sentencing of up to ten years. During the trial at Caglayan courthouse, Goktas delivered a witty defense filled with political satire, asserting that Erdogan should embrace satire and that the laws protecting freedom of expression remain unchanged.

He highlighted the historical acceptance of criticism in comedy, contrasting it with the current climate of censorship. Goktas, who has spent 88 days in custody, requested acquittal, emphasizing he poses no flight risk.

His arrest reflects a broader crackdown on dissent in Turkey, impacting various groups including artists and journalists. Outside the courthouse, supporters protested against his detention, voicing their outrage.
