Nigeria Launches Elite Navy Marine Corps for Maritime Security

On February 27, 2026, Nigeria graduated the first cohort of the newly established Elite Navy Marine Corps, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the country's maritime security. This formation is a response to evolving threats that intersect land and maritime vulnerabilities, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea, a vital area for offshore oil production and international shipping routes.

The Chief Naval Staff, Idi Abba, highlighted that the corps is designed to be a highly mobile and versatile force capable of conducting rapid deployments in littoral zones to support counterterrorism and anti-crime operations.
