Instagram to End Support for Encrypted DMs by 2026

Instagram officially announced on Friday that it will end support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages, effective May 8, 2026. The platform informed users through an update on its help page, stating that encrypted messaging will no longer be available.

Users are advised to download any messages or media they wish to retain before the feature is discontinued. Instagram explained that the end-to-end encryption was designed to ensure that only the sender and recipient could read messages and listen to calls, preventing third parties, including the platform owner, from accessing conversations.

The encryption system relied on a special security key stored on the user's device. Instagram clarified that while users could choose to share encrypted content, they would not be able to report features or forward messages outside of the chat.

The announcement has sparked discussions online regarding digital privacy and data security, particularly as social media platforms continue to adjust their messaging moderation policies. Meta, Instagram's parent company, did not provide further details on the reasons for discontinuing the feature.
