IRIAD Advocates for Democracy and Human Rights on Day of Commemoration

On 16 September 2026, the Initiative for Research, Innovation and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) and the Electoral Hub marked International Democracy Day by urging a reflection on the essence of democracy, which extends beyond merely electing leaders. Director Princess Hamman-Obels stated that true democracy ensures every voice is heard, every right is protected, and every citizen has a role in governance.

This year’s United Nations theme, “When Every Voice Counts, Democracy Delivers,” emphasizes the need for meaningful citizen engagement in democratic processes. The IRIAD highlighted that democracy must also encompass ongoing participation between elections through effective lawmaking and public consultations.

Additionally, the Inter-Parliamentary Union's theme, “Bring Human Rights into Focus,” underscores the critical role of human rights in sustaining democracy. The organizations called for credible, inclusive, and transparent elections, stressing that democracy is meaningful only when citizens can influence decisions and hold institutions accountable.
