IRIAD and Electoral Hub Push for Inclusive Democracy in Nigeria

The Initiative for Research, Innovation and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) and The Electoral Hub have called for a more inclusive, responsive, and accountable democracy in Nigeria. In a statement signed by Princess Abijah Hamman-Obels, Director of The Electoral Hub, they emphasized that democracy should extend beyond elections to include ongoing citizen participation, human rights protection, and effective public service delivery.

They stated that meaningful democratic participation requires citizens to engage with representatives, influence policies, and hold institutions accountable. The organizations highlighted that while credible elections are essential, they are insufficient for sustaining democratic governance.

They urged for stronger public consultations, transparent budgeting, and improved civic engagement. The director noted that barriers faced by marginalized groups, including women, young people, and persons with disabilities, must be addressed to ensure full participation in political life.

They stressed the importance of gender equity and the need for young people to be recognized as active participants in governance.
